Apple Drops New iPad Air and Pro!

On May 7, 2024, Apple’s “Let Loose” event sent shockwaves through the tech world, with CEO Tim Cook himself declaring it “the biggest day for iPad since its introduction.”  While the event also included updates to pro apps and new Magic Keyboards, the true stars of the show were undoubtedly the new iPads themselves.

New Apple iPads Available Now!

The good news? You don’t have to wait long to get your hands on these new devices. Both the iPad Air and iPad Pro are available to order today and will be hitting stores next week.

The All-New iPad Air

The iPad Air gets a refresh with not one, but two size options –  the familiar 11-inch and a brand new 13-inch model. Both sizes boast stylish new blue and purple finishes alongside the classic space gray and starlight options.

Powering the device is the M2 chip, ensuring smooth performance for everyday tasks and creative endeavors. The iPad Air remains compatible with the Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard, making it a versatile option for work, play, and everything in between.

The starting price for the 11-inch iPad Air sits at a comfortable $599, with the larger 13-inch model going for $799.

The iPad Pro Gets a Pro Makeover

The iPad Pro received a significant upgrade, both internally and externally. The display takes center stage with Apple’s innovative “Tandem OLED” technology, essentially combining two OLED panels for exceptional visuals.

Under the hood, the M4 chip promises a significant performance leap compared to the M2 found in the iPad Air. Apple claims it’s up to four times faster, making it ideal for demanding tasks like video editing and graphic design.

The iPad Pro retains its 11-inch and 13-inch size options, with the starting price for the 11-inch model at $999 and the 13-inch model at $1299.  Both models are impressively thin and light, with the 13-inch iPad Pro holding the title of Apple’s thinnest device ever.

New Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil Pro

Alongside the iPads, Apple introduced a redesigned Magic Keyboard. This sleeker and lighter iteration features a function row and a larger trackpad for a more comfortable laptop-like experience. The price starts at $299 for the 11-inch iPad Pro and goes up to $349 for the 13-inch model.

The Apple Pencil Pro adds some exciting features to the mix. It now boasts a pressure sensor in the barrel, allowing users to control functions by squeezing it.  Lost your Apple Pencil in the couch cushions again? Fear not, as the new model integrates with Apple’s Find My app, so you can locate it with ease. The Apple Pencil Pro comes in at $129.

Should You Upgrade?

Upgrading to a new iPad depends on your current setup and needs. If your current iPad Air or Pro is struggling to keep up with your workload or you crave a larger screen for creative pursuits, then the new models offer a compelling upgrade path.

Both the M2 chip in the Air and the M4 chip in the Pro promise significant performance improvements. Additionally, the iPad Pro’s Tandem OLED display is a major draw for those prioritizing stunning visuals.

However, iPads are renowned for their longevity. If your current iPad is still functioning well for your everyday tasks, there’s no need to rush out and upgrade.

Consider waiting a year or two to see what advancements Apple unveils next.  The Apple Pencil Pro’s pressure sensor might be a cool feature, but for casual users, the hefty price tag might not be justifiable.
